Philosophy Statement
We believe that all children deserve the highest quality of instruction possible. Such instruction will only occur when the teachers are aware of and able to respond to the unique qualities and characteristics of the students they instruct. We recognize that the gifted and talented students present particular academic and social challenges which require curriculum that is differentiated and responds to the needs, interests and abilities of gifted students. Our goal is to provide and support opportunities for high achieving and underachieving pupils to explore and express their uniqueness The goal of our district is to create an environment in which gifted and talented students can feel challenged and safe.
Activities for GATE Students
Honor's Academy
Honor Academy is developed as an outlet for students with a strong interest in which they wish to study outside of the regular classroom. Faculty members volunteer to mentor and advise students on such a project of interest. The project is presented at its completion, and students are then recognized for their special achievement. They receive a Washington "W" for the first project and an Eagle Pin for each following one. If a student completes at least one project each year, then a special award at 8th grade promotion will be presented as well as having the opportunity for first choice of electives in 9th grade.
Chess Club
Mr. Winfrey has opened up his classroom every Thursday from 3:00 - 4:00pm, room 3A, for this activity. It is available to any student who shows an interest in the skillful game of chess.
