Washington School, a California distinguished School, reflects the community it serves by preparing students for the 21st century while remaining true to the development of character and integrity. Washington School is unique in its grades 4-8 configuration, and is actually two schools in one. Washington Preparatory School (4-6) and Washington Middle School (7-8).
We were recognized as a California Distinguished School in both 2000 and 2004. We offer award-winning EL programs, and a new "State of the Art" computer lab, generously donated by the Cloverdale Rotary Club, and Middle school students can participate in league sports for boys and girl's basketball, volleyball, and soccer. They can also participate in the academic pentathlon LegoRobotics, and all students can join the chess club. Our School Board approved a Community Day School this summer that will offer an alternative program for students in grades 7-9. All classes in Preparatory receive 2 45-minute classes a week in instruction from a credentialed Physical Education teacher.
Teachers have the opportunity to work on curriculum during Common Planning Time on Wednesdays, when students are dismissed at 1:20. Multiple measures are used for assessments, and Preparatory report cards are standards-based. Middle school students receive letter grades, and credits that are required for 8th grade promotion.
Washington School has an active PTA that has generously supported assemblies, art projects, teacher materials, and other requests that benefit all students. The school's bilingual committee, ELAC oversees the programs for EL students. A group of parents and teachers are getting trained to develop a school garden, which has about 200 grape vines planted, along with individual class beds for planting.
