STUDENT ARRIVAL TIME

The Jefferson School office is open from 7:30am - 4:00pm daily. Students are not to arrive before 7:45am. Kindergarten students are asked to arrive at 8:00am and report directly to their classroom. Grade 1-3 students may arrive anytime after 7:45am and report to the playground for supervised morning recess. All students should be lined up for class at the sound of the yard duty whistle. On rainy days, the students go to the cafeteria and are released to their classrooms at 8:00am. Students are expected to be on time and not be "tardy" to class. School begins at 8:10am Monday - Friday for all K-3 students. Back and side gates are locked for safety during school hours.

ABSENCES

Absences must be verified as required by state law. Please send a note to the teacher or call the school office at (707) 894-1930 to give reasons for your child's absence. We can only excuse absences due to illness, doctor appointments or bereavement of an immediate family member. Other absences are considered "unexcused" for the purpose of state aid. Any extended absences cause the school concern and we will check the reason for the absence. Every day of absence causes an interruption in your child's learning program so we hope absences are kept to a minimum. Students with excessive unexcused absences and/or tardies will be referred to our SARB Board.

As a safety measure, a call-back program has been initiated at Jefferson School. An attempt to verify student absences is made through a phone call. Teachers are then informed as to the reason for the absence.

If you are planning to be out of town or on vacation between 5-20 days, please notify the school, as we can plan your child's education to continue through our Independent Study Program. Please call the school office at (707) 894-1930 for more information.

MEAL PROGRAM INFORMATION

Breakfast: $1.25 per day
Lunch: $2.25 per day
Milk or Juice: $0.35 per day

School breakfast and school lunch are both served daily, and include milk. Breakfast is served from 7:45am-8:10am daily. Breakfast, lunch and milk/juice tickets are sold on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Free and reduced rate lunches are available for identified students; information and forms may be obtained in the school office.

Children are encouraged to bring nutritious snacks (no candy) to eat during morning recess.

DISMISSAL INFORMATION

Students should go directly home or go to pre-arranged child care when dismissed from school. Students are not allowed to remain on school grounds after dismissal at the end of the day; there is no supervision.

If after-school arrangements for your child on a specific day are different than the usual arrangement, please send a note with your child stating the change. It will be logged in the office for the safety of your child. If there is an emergency and you need to call the school about after-school child care changes, please call well in advance of the end of the school day if at all possible. Every attempt will be made to accommodate your needs.

All students leaving school early must be signed out at the school office by a parent or legal guardian. No student may leave the campus after arriving at school without the permission of the principal or secretary.

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Bus transportation passes may be purchased for a fee for the full school year. Tickets, 1/2 year passes, free and reduced passes are also available. Bus service is provided to all students with passes/tickets beyond those in the immediate vicinity of the school. Bus schedules are available in the school office.

Students may walk or ride their bicycles to school. Students who ride their bikes to school are provided with a bike rack. Students may wish to bring an individual lock for security. Written parent permission to ride bikes will be required. Remember, it is the law that children under the age of 18 wear an approved safety helmet when riding their bike.

When dropping off or picking up your child, please be extremely careful! Do not park in the "red zone" in front of the school; this area is specifically reserved for cars and Laidlaw buses dropping off and picking up students. Do not drop off children outside of the covered eating/bus area, as this area is reserved for school buses. Please remember to use the crosswalks.

All students who cross Cloverdale Blvd. when walking to and from school must cross in the crosswalk at the North Street/Cloverdale Blvd. intersection with the crossing guard.

HOME/SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Good home/school communication is important. Parent-Teacher conferences are usually scheduled at the end of the first and second trimesters. Of course, parents or teachers may request additional conferences at any time. Teacher invitations for conferences are extended via telephone, note or letter. Parent-Teacher conferences for 2006-07 will be in the fall (11/6-11/9) and spring (3/6-3/9).

There are many occasions when parents will be invited to Jefferson School. Two of the most important events are Back-To-School Night, scheduled in September, and Open House, which is held in the spring. Please visit our calendar section for more information.

HOMEWORK/BEHAVIOR

  1. Homework is the student's and parent's responsibility.
  2. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved by providing a suitable time and place, as well as assistance as needed.
  3. Homework is designed to provide opportunities to practice skills taught in school.

KINDERGARTEN: The focus of homework is on parent participation and reinforcement. Several times a week, children may be asked to bring objects related to a subject and may have make-up or remedial work sent home. Homework should stimulate discussion with parents, and parents are encouraged to spend time exploring literature and reading with their children. Approximate time expected: 5 minutes.

1ST-3RD GRADES: The focus of homework is to reinforce basic skills taught in the classroom, encourage creativity and provide opportunities for family participation. Children receive homework grades on their report card according to the frequency of returned homework. Approximate time expected: 20 minutes, 4 nights a week (Monday-Thursday).

We hope that by showing interest in and valuing their children's work, parents will increase their children's school success and foster lifelong learning.

Jefferson School will be implementing Best Behavior, Building Positive Behavior Support In Schools by Jeff Sprague and Annemieke Golly. There are three main rules we will be asking children to follow on the playground, in the cafeteria and in the classroom:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible

Teachers have established classroom rules. Students are expected to behave in a responsible manner. Failure to follow classroom rules results in a consequence. A consequence can be a loss of privilege or recess playtime, or suspension from the class. Parents will be notified of any suspension by the teacher with a written notice and/or phone call. After a suspension, a parent conference is scheduled as soon as possible to discuss the suspension with the teacher. Suspensions are very rare at Jefferson School.
