Service Learning Cloverdale High School's Service Learning graduation requirement supports the belief that students will benefit from the opportunity to make meaningful connections and enrich the lives of others, by performing service for their community without receiving any external reward or financial benefit. Service Learning combines service to the community with classroom studies in a way that improves student learning. CHS students will work in collaboration with community members to meet real community needs, while learning more about their academic needs as well as civic responsibility and effective citizenship. Service Learning links education to service and service to learning. Statistics show that students who are involved in service learning programs perform better in the classroom and are more socially responsible. Service Learning also addresses our WASC Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs), which are goals for our CHS students. This requirement involves students working on a VOLUNTARY basis in non-profit agencies, the public sector or educational institutions. Prior approval from an administrator, counselor or teacher is required on any Service Learning Hours project selected. Sixty hours of voluntary community involvement will be required of each student that graduates from Cloverdale Unified High School. The class of 2006 will be the first to meet this requirement on a prorated basis (15 hours). Students are highly encouraged to complete the 15-hour requirement on a yearly basis. The counseling department will accept Service Learning hours completed throughout the summer months. This requirement must be met by seniors and approved by an administrator or counselor prior to May 1st of their graduating year.
