Cloverdale High School
Geometry 2020 - Math II

Welcome to geometry! This course will be different from the usual version of geometry. It is different simply because times have changed: calculators and computers have made calculations and drawing faster. As a result, the need to understand the basic ideas and the answers given by these machines is greater, as well as the need to use these tools in the most effective ways possible and to communicate what you know and how you know it! This course contains the basic elements of geometry as well as lots of additional algebra content and practice. You will also be expected to communicate your thoughts and findings to a much greater degree than in previous courses. This course will help prepare you for the year 2020. Don't look now... it's almost here!

Goals

You will:

  • Improve your geometry skills and knowledge
  • Improve your algebra skills by applying them to geometric problems
  • Have and use a variety of strategies for solving problems
  • Learn to read and use your textbook
  • Learn how to take notes which are effective
  • Practice verbalizing your thought processes orally and in writing
  • Learn to argue more effectively
  • Improve your presentation skills
  • See math as integrated and not simply a jumble of unrelated ideas
  • Take more responsibility for your learning

Course Content

This course contains material on lines and shapes, measurements of perimeter, area, volume, triangles and polygons, congruence and similarity, and triginometry. There is a major emphasis on using and expanding upon your algebra skills, three-dimensional geometry and the foundations for argument.

Evaluation

  • Assignments (homework, class work, summaries, big problems, projects, portfolio): 50%
  • Quizzes and tests: 40%
  • Participation and class work: 10%

Progress reports will be sent on grades below C or for changes in your performance or attitude. It is recommended that students with a semester grade below C repeat the semester the following year.

Books and Materials

The book for this class is loaned to you for your use. If you lose it, please see me so that it can be replaced. Please be careful with all materials you borrow and use. They all cost money to replace and you will be billed for damage and/or loss. You will beed a three ring notebook, metric-inch ruler, protractor, colored pencils, and a scientific calculator.

I Expect You To...

  • Come to class prepared, ready to work, with all materials, notebook, text
  • Participate and put forth your best efforts
  • Treat others with respect and dignity

Hints for Success in This Class

  1. Participate! Research shows that wehn you do, you learn more!
  2. Come prepared for class! If you do not have the needed materials, a hall pass could cost you one TARDY.
  3. When I or one of your fellow classmates are talking to the class, please listen. If you wish to address the class or me, please raise your hand.
  4. You will have approximately 15-45 minutes of homework each night. It is due at the BEGINNING of class the following day or when agreed. Stay on top of the work load!
  5. Work as a team with your classmates and me. Together we'll do much more!
  6. Show as much of your work as possible for all calculations and problems. When you are asked to explain your answer, be complete! Remember that I am more interested in how you get your answer than in the answer itself. Partial credit is awarded for work that is shown neatly and clearly.

Notebook Requirement

You should keep a notebook of your work in this class. It should be organized as described in the "notebook assignment" in the text. The purpose of the notebook is to help you organize all that we do in here so that you remember what we have covered.

Portfolio

You will compile selected work each semester for geometry and for your school portfolio. This will include big problems, a self-evaluation, quizzes and tests. We will discuss this later this semester. SAVE EVERYTHING!

If You Are Absent

  1. Call a friend for the assignment - you have one day to complete the work for each day of absence. Otherwise, reduced credit will be earned for late work.
  2. If you miss a test or quiz, you will have two days to take it or credit will be reduced.
  3. Please see me to negotiate for long absences.

If You Need Help

  1. Your first resource is your team - phone someone and talk about the work, or work together. I expect and encourage you to do this.
  2. Take advantage of me. I am here at 7am and here until 4pm or later everyday. Please see me at snack break, tutorial or lunch. After-school is a good time to talk to me about an issue or problem.
  3. It is your responsibility to recognize when you need help! I am only too happy to help you!
