AS English 9

Ms. Conner, Room 10

Welcome to my class! In this challenging course, you will learn how to respond and analyze short stories, novels and other forms of literature. In addition, you will be immersed in the writing process, creating many original pieces of your own.

Student Conduct - The Three R's

  1. RESPECT: Be respectful of yourself, others, the teacher, personal belongings and the classroom.
  2. RESPONSIBILITY: Be open to learning, complete all of your assignments to the best of your ability, place integrity in your work and arrive on time for class.
  3. RIGHTS: You have the right to communicate freely, to have access to grade information, to learn in a positive environment and to not be put down by others for your personal beliefs.

The following are NOT allowed in class:

  • Gum
  • Food
  • Drinks (other than bottled water)
  • Hairbrushes
  • Cell Phones
  • Personal listening devices (Discmans, iPods, etc.)

*Referrals will be given if any of these items are found in the classroom. Cell phones and headphones will be turned in to Mr. Lile.

Plagarism/Cheating

Copying any student's work will result in a "0" for both parties involved. Copying published documents and claiming them as your own will also result in a "0". Additional consequences many occur.

Homework

Homework is due at the deginning of the period. All assignments should be completed in blue or black pen and include title, name, date and period on the front page. Assignments that are one day late will receive 80% of the earned grade. Assignments that are two days late will receive 60% of the earned grade. In the case of an excused absence, you will have one day to make up the work for each day you are absent. Missing homework assignments will lower your overall grade.

In-Class Work

Many assignments will be completed during class and cannot be made up for points. Bring in your materials everyday unless directed otherwise. In-class participation is mandatory.I value everyone's thoughts and opinions. You will earn up to 150 points at the end of each semester as a participation grade.

Absences

Inc ase of excused absence, call a reliable peer for specific information, check with the homework log when you return to school, and check with Ms. Conner during TUTORIAL if you still have questions. You and you alone are responsible for collecting make-up work.

Grading

Your final grade will be determined by your performance on a combination of tests, quizzes, classwork, homework, participation, written assignments and projects. You may earn only up to half of a grade increase of your original grade through extra credit. Your final exam counts for roughly 10% of your overall grade. Your grade is based on a point system:

  • A = 100-90%
  • B = 89-80%
  • C = 79-70%
  • D = 69-60%
  • F = 59% and below
