Course Description
Students will learn child development through classroom instruction, while learning the process of observation as well as developing and presenting age appropriate activities to children. Community internships may include placement in preschools, day care centers, infant centers, elementary schools, licensed family day care homes, schools for exceptional children and recreational settings.
First semester concentrates on observations in the community classroom. Second semester concentrates on application in the community classroom.
Objectives
Student Outcomes and Objectives - Students will:
- Demonstrate professional dress and behavior appropriate for an Early Childhood Classroom Environment.
- Understand child development stages and needs.
- Select and lead developmentally and culturally appropriate activities.
- Demonstrate constructive use of a variety of discipline strategies.
- Demonstrate proper understanding of health and safety issues required in an Early Childhood Classroom.
- Understand the nutritional needs of young children.
- Understand diverse family structures and their possible impact on child development.
Hours
Students receive up to 65 hours of classroom instruction and up to 115 hours of work-based learning at community classroom/cooperative vocational education sites.
