Algebra II Welcome to Algebra II! Algebra II is the 3rd course in the sequence of college prep math courses. This course complements and expands upon the mathematical content of Algebra I and Geometry. Students who master Algebra II will gain experience with algebraic solutions of problems in various content areas, including quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, the binomial theorem, the complex number system and other advanced algebraic applications. This is a one-year course leading to Advanced Math, or Pre-Calculus. Classroom Routines You are required to have a pencil, your covered book, a spiral notebook, lined paper, graph paper and a scientific calculator for class. I do not loan pencils or books so please bring your own. Everyone needs to work on assigned math activities during class time or more work may be assigned. The teacher, not the bell, dismisses class when the classroom is completely picked up and all students are in their seats. Grading Policy Your work will be graded on a point system. Each assignment will fall into one of the following categories: Homework, Tests/Quizzes, Journal, Projects (to be explained later), and Participation. Your grade will be calculated by dividing your total number of points by the total number of points available in the class. Please do your own work. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Cheating will result in receiving zero points for that assignment or test. Grading Scale
Tardy Policy and Unexcused Absences Definition: You are tardy if you are not in the room when the bell finishes ringing. Class tardies will result in detention, parental contact, and referrals to the VP's office. NO work (homework, tests, quizzes, etc.) can be made-up for "cuts" or unexcused absences. Hall Passes Hall passes are for emergencies only and will be issued at the discretion of the teacher. Please do not ask to leave class to get your materials. You will only be given FIVE hall passes per semester. Homework Homework will be assigned almost every day. You will receive a list of the assignments at the beginning of each chapter, so you are expected to do the homework even if you are absent. I will check off the homework everyday for completeness and stamp your assignment sheet. At the end of the chapter I will collect your assignment sheet and give you credit for all the work you did in the chapter. I will not grade your homework for accuracy, however I expect you to attempt all assigned problems. Please try to complete each assignment since you will only receive full credit for it if you have attempted to do each problem and have shown all necessary work. Each homework assignment will be worth 4 points. To receive 4 points, you must have attempted to do every problem and show all of your work for each. To receive 3 points, you must have attempted to do at least 75% of the problems, and show all of your work. To receive 2 points, you must have attempted to do at least 50% of the problems and show work for all problems attempted. To receive 1 point, you must have attempted to do at least 25% of the problems and show work for at least 50% of the problems attempted. Tests Tests are given at the end of each chapter. Some tests will be given at the middle of chapters. You can expect about four to six tests each semester. If you have an excused absence the day of the test then you should expect to take a make-up test the day you return. Each test will be worth approximately 100 points. Homework Quizzes A homework quiz will be given approximately once a week. A homework quiz is a quiz where you copy problems from your homework and I grade them based on their accuracy and completeness. You will not be allowed to use anything except for your homework on these quizzes and I will only give you the page number and problem number of the problems on the quiz. Be sure to do your homework neatly and accurately so you will be able to do well on these quizzes. Warm-ups/Journal There will be a daily warm-up at the beginning of every class period. You are to begin working on the warm-up when the bell rings. Warm-ups will mainly consist of review problems from the previous day. If you were absent the previous day, or did not understand the material that was covered, it is very important that you make your best effort on the Journal Warm-Up for credit. At the end of the period there will be a Journal Closing Writing Assignment topic for you to write on till the bell rings. The Journal warm-ups and closing will be worth a total of 2 points daily and will be done in your classroom journal each day. If you do not follow procedures carefully you will lose points for the journal activities. Extra Help I am available most afternoons until about 4pm, and during tutorial period in Room 8. Please come in if you need extra help, or make special arrangements for another time if needed.
